Pasi Payaru/Pacahi Payaru Sundal - Soaked and cooked pasi payaru/green gram tempered with mustard seeds, curry leaves, red chilli and flavored with grated coconut. It is a healthy and protein rich dish. It can be eaten as an evening snack.

You can make this sundal for navarathri too. Navarathri is coming around the corner, you can make different sundal each day. Here, I have added onion to this sundal recipe. But if you are making it for navarathri, you can skip the onion. Apart from making this sundal for festival, you can make this as an evening snack instead of having fried foods.

Pachai Payaru Sundal/Green Gram Sundal

INGREDIENTS
  PRINT RECIPE  
Green Gram/Pasi Payaru - 1/2 cup
Grated Coconut - 1/4 cup
Salt - to taste
Oil - 2 teaspoon
Mustard Seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
Dry Red Chilli - 2 nos
Curry Leaves - 10 nos
Onion - 1/4 cup, chopped
Asafoetida - a generous pinch
INSTRUCTIONS

1Wash and soak green gram in water for 7 to 8 hours or overnight. Then boil water in a pan and add the soaked green gram in it.

2Cook it for 5 to 10 min or till it is done. Take the green gram and press it to check if its cooked soft. Then strain the water and keep aside.

3Heat a pan with 2 teaspoon oil. Then add the mustard seeds, allow it to splutter. Then add dry red chilli, curry leaves, asafoetida. Stir it for few seconds without burning it.

4Next, goes in the chopped onion. Cook the onion till it becomes soft.

5Now, add the cooked green gram and enough salt. Give it a mix and leave it over a medium low flame for a minute.

6Add in the grated coconut and give a quick mix. Finally, add the chopped coriander leaves, mix it. Remove the sundal from the the heat. Healthy sundal is ready!!

NOTES

Since the green gram soaked overnight, cook it in the open pot as I did here. Do not pressure cook it otherwise it will become mushy. But If you are soaking it for less than 3 hours, then you can pressure cook it for two whistles.

Here, I have added onions to this sundal. If you don't want, you can skip it.
