Kondai Kadalai Sundal/Black Channa Sundal - Cooked kondai kadalai tempered with mustard seeds, curry leaves, red chilli and flavored with grated coconut. It is a basic sundal recipe and a healthy south Indian snack. It is also prepared during festival days like Saraswathi poojai, Vinayagar chaturthi, Navaratri festival days and offered to god. Vinayagar chaturthi is coming in few days. So, I thought this is the perfect time post this recipe. More vinayagar chaturthi post are on the way. Make this Sundal on festival days or as a healthy evening snack on regular days.

Kondai Kadalai Sundal/Black Channa Sundal

INGREDIENTS

Kondaikadalai/Black Channa - 1/2 cup
Mustard Seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
Urad dal/Ulunthu - 1/2 teaspoon
Dry Red Chilli - 2 nosW
Curry Leaves - 5 nos
Asafoetida - a generous pinch
Finely Grated Coconut - 3 tablespoon
Oil - 2 teaspoon
Salt - to taste
INSTRUCTIONS

1Wash and soak kondai kadalai in water for 7 to 8 hours or overnight. If you forgot to soak overnight, add the chickpeas in boiling water, cover it and soak it for 3 hours. After that, transfer the chickpeas with the water to the pressure cooker.

2Cook it for 3 to 4 whistles. It has to hold its shape and well cooked too. Check if the chickpeas cooked or not by pressing one chickpea. If it is soft and mushy, then it is well cooked. After that, strain the chickpeas in a metal strainer.

3Once all the water from the chickpeas strained and still warm, add enough salt to it. Mix well and keep it aside. Now, heat a pan with oil. Once it becomes hot, add mustard seeds and urad dal/ulunthu. Allow it to splutter and fry the urad dal till it becomes golden. Now, add asafoetida. Stir it.

4Next break the red chillies into two and add. Also add curry leaves and give it few seconds. After that add the cooked and salted kondai kadalai/chickpeas. Give it a mix.

5Finally, add the grated coconut and stir it for few seconds. Remove it from the heat, sundal is ready to serve.

NOTES

You could also add salt while you cook the kondai kadalai/chickpeas.

Instead of red chilli, green chilli can also be added.

If you want you can also add sliced onion and saute till it becomes soft before adding kondai kadalai.

You can also squeeze a little bit lemon juice at the end. It gives a nice punch to the dish.
