Orange Chicken - Lightly battered fried chicken pieces saluted in a sweet and tangy sauce made with orange juice, brown sugar, soy sauce and few more ingredients. It is most people's favorite chinese takeaway.

Though this orange chicken is not an authentic chinese recipe, we can get this in lot of chinese restaurants in US including panda express. I also tried this one or two times at a chinese restaurant. I liked it but the sauce ratio was more than the chicken quantity and it was way too sweet. But I made it at home according to my taste. That's the biggest advantage of making something we love at home, isn't it? We can adjust the ingredients as per our wish and taste buds.

Here, I added red chilli flakes too. It gives a nice punch and compliment well with the sweet chicken. But if you want purely sweet and tangy orange chicken or if you are serving to kids, you can avoid the red chilli flakes. Try it at home before you buy from a restaurant next time, you will never want to buy from outside. Now, let's see how to make orange chicken..

INGREDIENTS

For the chicken:
Chicken Breast(boneless) - 1 Piece, about 350 grams
Egg White - from 1 egg
Corn Starch/Corn Flour - 1 tablespoon
Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
Pepper Powder - 1/2 teaspoon
For the Sauce:
Sesame Oil - 1 teaspoon
Garlic - 1 teaspoon, minced
Ginger - 1 teaspoon, minced
Soya Sauce - 1 tablespoon
Orange Juice - 1/2 cup
Orange Zest - 1 teaspoon
Brown Sugar - 2 tablespoon
Vinegar - 1 tablespoon
Corn Starch/Corn Flour - 1 teaspoon
Red Chilli Flakes - 1/2 teaspoon
White Sesame Seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
INSTRUCTIONS

1Clean the chicken and cut into bite size pieces. To this add the egg white, cornflour, salt and pepper.

2Mix well and let it marinate for 10 to 15 minutes. After that heat a pan with oil. Once it becomes hot enough, drop the chicken pieces one by one to the oil.

3Fry the chicken for one minute on one side. Then flip all the pieces and cook it for another minute. Once it's cooked and the color becomes nice golden brown, take it out from the oil and put in the paper towel to absorb excess oil. Fry the remaining chicken pieces and keep this aside for now.

4Now for the sauce, heat a pan with oil. Add minced garlic and ginger, give it a quick stir . Then add the soya sauce followed by orange juice.

5Also add brown sugar, vinegar, red chilli flakes and orange zest. Bring this mixture to a boil. Then take a teaspoon of corn flour in a bowl with little water(about 2 to 3 tablespoon)and mix it well without any lumps. Add the cornflour mixture to the pan.

6Mix it and simmer the sauce till it thickens over low to medium flame. Then add the fried chicken pieces and saute it in the sauce.

7Once the sauce is coated well with every chicken pieces, garnish it with sesame seeds or chopped spring onions or both. Then remove from the stove. Serve this hot!!

NOTES

Adding sesame seeds at the end is optional. You can also add spring onion too if you want.

Instead of brown sugar, you can also use honey.

Here I have used chicken breast pieces. If you want you can use chicken thigh pieces which is more tender.

Orange zest is nothing but the grated orange skin. Just grate the orange skin using a small grater holes. Don't grate close to the inner skin, that would be little bitter. Grate only the orange color outer skin.
