Kadalai Paruppu Sundal/Bengal Gram Sundal/Split Chickpea Sundal - Cooked kadalai paruppu tempered with mustard seeds, curry leaves, red chilli and flavored with grated coconut. It is a south indian healthy snack. This is also be prepared during festival days like saraswathi pooja, vinayagar chathurthi etc and offered as parasatham.

Kadalai paruupu sundal is the one my mom makes occasionally. My mom prepares it 3 to 4 times a year. She usually makes it during saraswati poojai and vinayagar chathurthi. But I make this often as a evening snack and during festival days. We also call this as poomparuppu sundal. I don't know why we call this in that name. May be it is because it is soft like a poo(flower). :) You also make this sundal during festivals or even as a evening snack on a regular day throughout the year and enjoy!!

INGREDIENTS

Kadalai Paruppu - 1/2 cup
Mustard Seeds - 1/4 teaspoon
Dry Red Chilli - 2
Curry Leaves - 5 leaves
Finely Grated Coconut - 2 tablespoon
Oil - 1 teaspoon
Salt - to taste

1Wash and soak kadalai paruppu in water for 2 to 3 hours. Soaking the paruppu helps to speed up the cooking process.

2After that, boil water in a pot. Once it starts boiling, add the drained kadalai paruppu. Cook it till it is well cooked but not mushy. It has to hold its shape. It may take 10 to 15 minutes. After it is done, strain the water using a metal strainer. Now add required salt and mix. Keep this aside.

3Now, heat a pan with oil. Once it becomes hot, add mustard seeds. Allow it to splutter. Next break the red chillies into two and add, also add curry leaves and asafoetida. Give it few seconds. After that add the cooked and salted kadalai paruppu.

4Give it a mix. Finally, add the grated coconut and mix it. Remove it from the heat, sundal is ready to serve.

NOTES

You can also add salt while you cook the kadalai paruppu.

Instead of red chilli, green chilli can also be added.

If you want you can also add sliced onion after adding asafoetida. Fry it till it becomes soft and then add the cooked kadalai paruppu.

Instead of cooking the paruppu on stove top, you can also cook it in a pressure cooker. Just make sure that is not over cooked.
