Panagam/Panakaram is a famous, delicious and healthy summer drink of Tamil Nadu. It is prepared with jaggery, lemon juice, water, cardamom and dry ginger powder. It is being called by the name either panagam or panakaram. We call it as panakaram. Some people make this drink with tamarind instead of lemon. That also will taste great. My mom makes always this with lemon and I love that. So I am making this recipe with lemon today. If you are offering this to god during ram navami, you can add few tulsi leaves too.

I spoke about the drinks offered during chithirai(tamil month) festival in my Neer Mor recipe post. Well, this is also one of the drink people offered during festival times. Panakaram and neer mor are prepared mainly during summer to naturally beat the heat.

Coming to panakam, in this drink we are adding jaggery which is rich in iron and lemon which cools the body, dry ginger powder which helps for digestion. Totally this panakaram is not only a summer drink but also a healthy drink. This drink taste great after refrigeration. Just add few ice cubes before you serve or better refrigerate it for half an hour. In that half an hour period all flavor will be infused into the drink and it will taste delicious. Make this panakam and stay cool!!

NOTES

Powdered jaggery dissolves quickly in the water. If you are adding crushed or chopped jaggery, let it soak for 15 to 20 min.

Once you make this panakaram, refrigerate it for atleast half an hour. It taste better after refrigeration and also it will be more flavorful.

The color of panagam depends on the jaggery. If you use lighter color jaggery, then your panagam will be lighter in color. If you use dark color jaggery, then the drink will be darken in color.
