Rajma Masala - Cooked Rajma or kidney beans sauteed with onion, tomato and with only few spices. It is a side dish and goes well with rice and any gravy (kuzhambu).

We are not using rajma in our tamil nadu cusine so I didn't cook this before. Once my friend introduced me to rajma gravy and shared her recipe. Since then I have been using it in my cooking regularly. But today, I am going to share my own recipe. I changed it like a south indian poriyal with coconut. Me and my husband love this rajma masala poriyal. So I make this often, sometimes weekly once. Do try this and let me know how you like it..

INGREDIENTS

Rajma/Kidney Beans - 1/2 cup
Onion - 1/4 cup, thinly sliced
Tomato - 1, small size, chopped
Ginger Garlic Paste - 1 teaspoon
Fennel Seeds - 1/4 teaspoon
Chilli Powder - 3/4 teaspoon
Turmeric Powder - 1/8 teaspoon
Curry Leaves - 1 sprig
Oil - 2 teaspoon
Salt - to taste

1Soak the rajma in enough water for 8 hours or overnight.

2After that, add it in a pressure cooker along with water. Pressure cook it for 5 to 6 whistles. Keep it aside till all the pressure released by itself. Now, heat a pan and add oil. Once it becomes hot, add fennel seeds and thinly sliced onions. Saute it till it becomes soft. Then add in ginger garlic paste.

3Stir it till the raw smell of ginger garlic paste goes away. Then goes in the chopped tomatoes. Cook it till the tomatoes are become mushy. At this stage add chilli powder, turmeric powder. Saute it for a minute over medium flame. Do not burn the masala powder.

4Now, add cooked rajma with 1/4 cup of cooked water. Add in enough salt and stir it in high flame.

5After most of the water evaporates and rajma becomes dry. Now add curry leaves, grated coconut and stir it. Switch off the stove immediately. Rajma masala fry is ready!!!

NOTES

You can also add coriander powder if you want.

It is a little dry side dish for rice. So do not add more water while stir frying.
