Karuveppilai Podi - It is mainly made with curry leaves and with dals, pepper and red chilli for spiciness. It can be mixed with hot rice with ghee or oil. It is very healthy and rich in iron. You can have a teaspoon of this powder daily.

In India, we can get curry leaves easily. But here in USA, we get it rarely and a bit costly too. Whenever curry leaves are available, I make this podi and store it in an airtight container to keep the freshness.

You can use this powder in many ways. As I told already, you can eat this with hot rice and ghee or oil. Also add this little bit along with idli podi while making podi idli, podi oothappam. Sometimes I add a teaspoon of this in rasam, it adds a nice flavor and taste to rasam. Prepare this podi and have it often. Let's see how to make it..

INGREDIENTS

Karuveppilai/Curry Leaves - 1 cup, tightly packed
Ulunthu/Urad Dal - 2 tablespoon
Kadalai Paruppu/Channa Dal - 1 tablespoon
Black Pepper - 1 teaspoon
Dry Red Chilli - 8
Asafoetida - 1/8 teaspoon
Salt - as required
INSTRUCTIONS

1Heat a pan over medium flame. Add curry leaves to the pan. Dry roast till the leaves are well roasted, it should be crispy and it should break if you crush the leaf. After that, transfer the leaves to a dry plate.

2In the same pan, add urad dal and channa dal. Dry roast dal. When it is almost done add the red chillies. Roast it for another minute. After the red chillies well roasted, transfer it to the plate.

3Again in the same pan, dry roast the black pepper. Add asafoetida while black pepper is about to be done, roast it for a few seconds. Now transfer these to the plate. Allow it to cool down completely

4Then transfer all the ingredients to a mixer and grind it into a coarse powder. Curry leaves powder is now ready!!

NOTES

You can also add toor dal if you want.

Grind this podi into a coarse powder or a fine powder. It is totally up to you.

Store this powder in an airtight container to keep the freshness.

Wash curry leaves and dry it in the shade completely for one to two hours if it has any dirts.
