Vazhaipoo/Banana Flower Poriyal - Cleaned and chopped vazhaipoo cooked and then sauteed with mustard seeds, curry leaves, chopped onion, garlic, grated coconut and some more ingredients. It is a side dish for rice and kuzhambu.

I usually make vazhaipoo vadai and vazhaipoo kootu but nowadays I am making poriyal more often. It is a very healthy and everyday south indian dish. Have it with hot rice and any kuzhambu. INGREDIENTS

Vazhaipoo/Banana Flower - 2 cups, cleaned and chopped
Onion - 1/2 cup, chopped
Garlic - 2 cloves
Green Chilli - 2
Curry Leaves - 1 sprig
Coconut - 1/4 cup, grated
Turmeric Powder - 1/4 teaspoon
Oil - 2 teaspoon
Cumin Seeds - 1/4 teaspoon
Mustard Seeds - 1/4 teaspoon
Salt - to taste
INSTRUCTIONS

1Clean vazhaipoo/banana blossom and chop them into small pieces. Put them into buttermilk till you are ready to make the poriyal. Now, boil some water in a pan. Drain buttermilk from vazhaipoo and add the vazhaipoo to boiling water. Also, add turmeric powder and salt to boiling water.

2Mix it and let it cook for around 10 to 15 min. Meanwhile keep everything ready for tempering (chopped onion, chopped garlic, grated coconut, curry leaves and slitted green chilli)

3Check vazhaipoo in between to see if it is cooked. After it is done, drain the water using metal strainer and keep aside. Now, heat another dry pan and add oil. Once it is hot, add mustard seeds, curry leaves. Let it splutter. Then add green chillies and chopped garlic. Saute it for few seconds.

4After that add chopped onion and fry till it becomes soft. Now add the cooked vazhaipoo and add little salt (remember we already added salt while boiling vazhaipoo). Saute it over medium heat for 3-5 minutes.

5Once the water content from the vazhaipoo evaporates, add grated coconut. Give it a stir. Switch off the stove immediately. Poriyal is ready to eat.

NOTES

Instead of green chilli you can also add red chilli.

If you want you can add vazhaipoo straightly after tempering instead of boiling it first. If you do so, it will take some more time to cook vazhaipoo.
