This is not like regular maavu urundai or maavu laddu. For this recipe, we have to cook the flour first. There are two methods to cook the flour. Most people make rotti out of it and grind into powder. But I am going to use another method which is steam cooking the flour as my mom do (like we do for regular puttu). This method is easy to do and less time consuming than the former method. My mom also told me that her grandmother used to make this by crushing all the ingredients in a stone ural(large stone motor) with ulakkai(wooden pestle). Hearing that, I am amazed how old this recipe is, as far as I know this recipe has been passed to 4th generation (to me) in my family.

Now back to the recipe, this sweet balls taste best when it is eaten on the same day. If you want to store it for few days, keep it in the refrigerator. But consume within 2 to 3 days. I usually make a very small batch and consume it on the same day. Try this often and enjoy all the benefits from this wonderful dish. Let's see how to make this..

2If lumps are forming, break it well. Take some flour and press it in your hand. It has to holds its shape as shown in the pic below (like a kozhukattai) and if you crush it, it has to loosen up. Put a cotton cloth in a idli plate and transfer the flour to the idli plate.

3Steam cook (like cooking idli) it around 10 min over a medium flame. After that, let it cool down a little bit and transfer the cooked flour to a plate and keep aside. The consistency of cooked flour/puttu has to be soft and smooth. If yours has many lumps, just put it in a mixer and grind it a bit to remove lumps.

5Dry roast coconut till it becomes golden brown. While coconut is almost roasted, add cardamom along with coconut. Just roast it for few seconds and transfer these to separate plate. Let it cool down. Meanwhile remove the skin of peanuts by rubbing the peanuts together with hands.

7Now add this ground powder to cooked kelvaragu flour. Add dry ginger powder and grated/powdered jaggery. Mix it well with your hands for 3 to 5 min. Good mixing helps to melt the jaggery and binds the flour.
