Paasi Paruppu/Moong Dal Payasam- It's one of the festive and traditional dish. It is made with cooked paasi paruppu, jaggery, cardamom as main ingredients.

No matter how many payasam are there, Paasi Paruppu Payasam is my all time favorite dish. My mom make it very often for festivals. She make it especially for me because I am the one who addicted to this dish at my home. I have been thinking what to post for Tamil new year. What other dish can do a better justice in this auspicious day other than our own favorite recipe, right? So here I am with the recipe..

If you also like paasi paruppu payasam or want to try, make it and enjoy. I do prefer making this in a pan rather than in a pressure cooker. Payasam consistency and taste will be better if you cook it in a pan. Let's make paruppu payasam. Celebrate this Tamil New Year with this wonderful sweet dish.

2In a sauce pan, boil water(approx 3 cups). Once it starts boiling, drain water from soaked paasi paruppu and add the paruppu to the boiling water. Let it cook over medium to high flame. 3Stir it till just all the jaggery dissolves(no need to heat it for a long). Then strain the jaggery syrup through a metal strainer to remove any impurities. Keep your coconut milk also ready. Let's check the consistency of paruppu. It has to be cooked soft but mushy(like shown below)

NOTES

Instead of coconut milk. you can also add plain whole milk. That is also taste good.

Instead of grated coconut my mom adds small chopped coconut bits fried in ghee that gives a crunchy taste to the payasaam. If you like, you can also do the same.

When you heat jaggery with water, we are just trying to dissolve jaggery. So that we can strain and remove any impurities. So you do not need cook for long.

If you do not have the patience or don't have enough time to cook the paruppu in a pan, you can pressure cook it. But the taste and consistency will slightly be differ.

Soaking the paruppu for 30 min will help to cook faster.
