Onion Cucumber Raita/Vellari Thayir Vengayam - Curd/Yogurt mixed with onion, cucumber, salt, sugar and cumin powder.

Onion raita is a great accompaniment for biriyani's, many variety rices, pulaos and even for parathas. It also helps to cut-down the spiciness/heat of the main dish. There are endless usage with this simple raita. This is a very easy to make dish and probably everyone knows how to make it. Here i am sharing my version of the recipe. I am adding cumin powder which gives a nice flavour. Also, I am adding sugar which blends well with the sourness of curd. Now let's see how to make onion cucumber raita..

INGREDIENTS

Curd/Yogurt - 1 cup
Onion - 1/4 cup (chopped)
Cucumber - 1/4 cup (chopped)
Cumin Powder - 2 generous pinch
Salt - 2 generous pinch
Sugar - 1/4 tsp
INSTRUCTIONS

1Chop the onion very fine, chop the cucumber into small pieces. Wash the chopped onion well.

2Then drain all the water. Keep it aside. In a bowl, take curd/yogurt. Beat with a hand whisk or with a spoon.

3The curd I am using is very thick. So I am adding 1/4 cup water to it. Just beat it till it all becomes smooth. Then add cumin powder, salt and sugar. Mix it well.

4Now add the chopped onion and cucumber to the curd. Mix well. That's it. Onion Cucumber Raita is ready to serve.

NOTES

If your curd is not thick, you don't need to add any water.

Washing onion helps to remove the strong flavour and spiciness of onion.
