Vazhaipoo/Banana Flower Vadai - Deep fried patties made with cleaned, finely chopped vazhaipoo/banana flower ground with soaked split bengal gram and few other ingredients.

When i think of Vazhaipoo, the first recipe would come into my mind is Vazhaipoo Vadai rather than poriyal or kootu. Obviously, who doesn't like fried food? Cleaning of vazhaipoo takes little bit extra time which makes everybody to think that this might be a tough task to do. But for a good and healthy dish, I would say spending extra time will be totally worth it. Even people who don't like vazhaipoo also will change their opinion after tasting this. Vazhaipoo is loaded with lot of nutrients that is a another good reason to try this dish.

INGREDIENTS

Kadalai Paruppu/Channa Dal - 1/2 cup
Vazhaipoo/Banana Flower - 1 cup (cleaned and chopped)
Red Chilli - 2
Garlic - 2 cloves
Onion - 1(medium size)
Green Chilli - 1
Fennel Seeds/Soambu - 1/2 tsp
Rice Flour - 1 tbsp
Asafoetida - 1/4 tsp
Coriander Leaves - 1/4 cup (chopped)
Curry Leaves - 2 sprigs
Salt - as needed
Oil - to deep fry
INSTRUCTIONS

1Wash kadalai paruppu 2 to 3 times and soak it in enough water with red chillies for atleast 2 hours. Drain the water completely. Grind paruppu, red chilli and garlic into a coarse paste. Do not add water while grinding.

2Clean the vazhaipoo/banana flower and put in a bowl of water to avoid blackening. Now take the flowers and chop finely, put it in a bowl of water again.

3Take ground channa dal, vazhaipoo, chopped onions, green chilli, curry leaves, coriander leaves, fennel seeds, rice flour, asafoetida and required salt in a bowl and mix well.

4Make equal size balls out of the mix. Now take each ball and flatten it between your palms.

5Heat enough oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Carefully drop in the patties one by one. Fry 4 to 5 patties at a time. Fry it all till it becomes golden brown.

6Now remove it from oil and place it in a kitchen tissue to remove excess oil. Vadais are now ready to eat.

NOTES

Before cleaning the vazhaipoo, apply a little bit oil to your hands to avoid the stain.

If you don't like more vazhaipoo in vadais, you can reduce the quantity to 1/2 cup.

Squeeze out water from chopped vazhaipoo before mixing it with other ingredients.

Fry vadais over medium heat only. If you fry in high heat you well get only color but it won't be cooked inside.

Enjoy this crunchy vadai with coconut chutney or as it is.
