Ulunthu Kanchi is a very healthy recipe as it has ulunthu(urad dal), garlic and cumin. It is very healthy particularly for women because ulunthu has calcium, iron and folic acid. Try to have this kanchi atleast once or twice a month.

My mom used to make this recipe every sunday morning for breakfast. She also makes a spicy vengaya milagai as a side dish which i love the most. Any pickle or coconut thogaiyal would also be a perfect side dish.

Today,I am making this kanchi using black gram(urad dal) without skin. But you can also make this with black gram(with skin) which is even more healthier. Lets see how to make.

INGREDIENTS
  PRINT RECIPE  
Raw rice  -  1/2 cup
Black gram/urad dal  -  1/4 cup
Garlic  -  5 cloves
Cumin seeds  -  1/2 tsp
Water  -  3 cups (approx)
Milk (Boiled)  -  1/2 cup
Salt  -  to taste
INSTRUCTIONS

1Take rice and black gram in a bowl. Wash it well with water. Then soak both rice and black gram together in water for half an hour.

2Now heat a pressure cooker, add black gram and rice along with garlic cloves and cumin seeds. Next pour 3 cups of water. Add in enough salt and mix well.

3Then close the pressure cooker lid, cook for 4-5 whistles. Switch off the stove. After the steam escapes fully, open the lid. Then turn on the stove,mash the cooked rice and black gram very well on medium heat.

4Pour boiled milk and mix it well. Add extra water if required. Cook it for 5 mins. Turn off the stove

NOTES

Consistency of kanchi/porridge is your choice. Add more water or milk as per your need.

If you want more flavourful kanchi, add grated coconut just before removing the kanchi/porridge from flame.

Serve it hot or warm. Eat healthy! Stay Healthy!
